چکیده

A robust controller combining a feedforward compensator (for the measured disturbance) and a feedback RST controller is designed for the control of S. cerevisiae cultures. The controller is based on the linearization of Sonnleitner’s model allowing a simple transfer function model to be derived, which describes the relation between the ethanol concentration, the substrate feed and a measurable disturbance image of the substrate demand for cell growth. This control scheme is made robust to neglected high frequency dynamics (of glucose and oxygen) and uncertain stoichiometry coefficients using the observer polynomial. This control scheme, whose performance is demonstrated in simulation, requires only the on-line measurements of the ethanol concentration and bioreactor volume, estimation of the oxygen transfer rate, and minimal a priori process knowledge, i.e. only one stoichiometric coefficient. Optimization of A Fed-Batch Fermenter Producing Baker’s Yeast Using Simulated Annealing Method

Modeling of fermentation processes is so complicated and uncertain; therefore it is necessary to provide a robust and appropriate dynamic optimization method. In order to obtain the maximum amount of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the bioreactor must be operated under optimal conditions. To determine substrate feeding in a fed-batch bioreactor, a simulated annealing (SA) approach was examine...

Robust Control with Youla Parametrization of Yeast Fed-batch Cultures

Optimal productivity of S. cerevisiae cultures can be achieved through the regulation of the ethanol concentration at a low value. In this study, a robust control strategy is developed, which requires very little knowledge about the process, i.e. only one yield coefficient and the on-line measurement of the ethanol concentration. A Youla parametrization is selected in order to reject asymptotic...

Sequential Adaptive Networks for Feed Forward Control of Fed-batch Bioprocesses

s: The development of Sequential Adaptive Networks (SAN) for on-line control of bioprocesses is presented. SAN architecture is an assembly of networks arranged chronologically with each sub-network assigned to a specific sampling interval of the process. The sub-network can have any desired architecture. For the fed-batch yeast fermentation process, each sub-network is a three-layered feed-forw...

Adaptive extremum-seeking control applied to productivity optimization in yeast fed-batch cultures

In this study, we consider the problem of optimizing the productivity of fed-batch cultures of S. cerevisiae, which are characterized by strongly nonlinear kinetic models based on the bottleneck assumption of Sonnleitner and Käppeli [1986] and ethanol inhibition resulting from the fermentation of a possible excess of substrate feeding. In contrast with most published studies where the critical ...

Kinetics of Biphasic Growth of Yeast in Continuous and Fed-Batch Cultures

The influence of dilution rate on the production of biomass, ethanol, and invertase in an aerobic culture of Succharornyces carlsbergensis was studied in a glucoselimited chemostat culture. A kinetic model was developed to analyze the biphasic growth of yeast on both the glucose remaining and the ethanol produced in the culture. The model assumes a double effect where glucose regulates the flux...
